Don't Feed the Troll

Beware The Troll

The following is just a small snippet of a fantastic guide I found here: http://www.teamtechnology.co.uk/troll.htm

Take the time to read the full guide for webmasters in dealing with trolls.

The term “troll” can mean a number of different things, but in essence, a troll is a person who aims to have ‘pleasure’ at your expense. There are five main types of trolls. The first four are people who pretend to be someone that they are not - they create personae that you think are real, but they know is fictitious.

Playtime Trolls: an individual plays a simple, short game. Such trolls are relatively easy to spot because their attack or provocation is fairly blatant, and the persona is fairly two-dimensional.

Tactical Trolls: This is where the troller takes the game more seriously, creates a credible persona to gain confidence of others, and provokes strife in a subtle and invidious way.

Strategic Trolls: A very serious form of game, involving the production of an overall strategy that can take months or years to develop. It can also involve a number of people acting together in order to invade a list.

Domination Trolls: This is where the trollers’ strategy extends to the creation and running of apparently bona-fide mailing lists.

Psycho Trolls: These trolls have an unconscious psychological need to feel good by making others feel bad. Such people may use their real names on the internet, and they may not even realise that they are “trolling”.

How To Stop Someone Cyber Stalking You With A Reverse Email Search

Everyone knows how big of a problem stalking is but what you don’t know is that cyber stalking is becoming just as big of a problem. Did you know that there was a survey done that states that one million women and 371 thousand men are stalked yearly in the United States?

So what is cyber stalking? It is similar to stalking offline but not quite the same. It is basically where someone uses electronic communication media to harass you, threaten you, bully you or try their best to intimidate you, their victim.

The communication media that they might use can include email, websites, forums, newsgroups, instant messaging and anything else that is online.

You will know when you have someone cyber stalking you because they use a large variety of techniques to harass you or their other victims. You may find that you start receiving hostile and unwelcome or unwanted emails.

The key word is unwanted. If you feel uneasy about the contact someone is giving to you they may very well be stalking you online.

They may publish false information about you in chat rooms and forums. They have also been found to pose as victims in provocative and confrontational sessions online and in email messages with other people. They will also use MySpace and other online sites to harass their victims.

To get to their victims there are many times that physical stalkers become cyber stalkers. The internet makes it easier for stalkers to contact their victim in a lot of new ways.

This doesn’t mean that you don’t want to get online, it just means that you need to be careful when you are online. Always pay attention and watch what you are doing.

Putting personal information online in an unsecured area is a bad idea unless you are running an online business and want to be contacted. Even then that contact should always be in a professional manner relating to the business you offer.

One thing you need to be aware of is that the stalking starts online as cyber stalking, it can still turn into physical stalking. This means that you could start receiving unwanted and abusive phone calls frequently. You could experience vandalism, trespassing and maybe even a physical assault.

As you can see, the problem of cyber stalking is not uncommon and there are steps that can be taken to make your life a lost easier. You do not have to sit back and get walked over.

You can hire a private investigator that is an expert in reverse email investigations. They can trace the email back to the senders, locate and identify him and deliver a report that can be used in a court of law to prosecute your stalker.

Stalking is serious business and should not be taken lightly so be sure the investigator you hire is qualified to carry this investigation through to the end. Many older investigators will not be familiar with this field and mistakenly tell you that a supeopne or search warrent is required. In their confusion they may also think you are asking them to hack into someone email account. Make sure the PI you hire is widely acknowledged as an expert in email tracing and is therefore qualified to handle the job.

Forum Trolling - How to Handle Trolls

I have been receiving a lot of email lately asking some very important questions on how to deal with Internet Trolls, and what to do when their trolling becomes more threatening.

It’s really tough not to allow your personal emotions get in the way. It can be even more difficult not to react to someone who is constantly harassing you, or your forum members.

But, I cannot stress enough, and will say it until I am blue in the face: DON”T FEED THE TROLL.

What does that mean? It’s simple really, do not respond in anyway shape or form to a troll. Their whole purpose is exactly that, to get a reaction, any reaction from the people/community they are trolling.

As an admin, or monitor on a forum board, your job is to prevent the trolling, not fuel it. Here are some basic steps to block trolling:

  1. Immediately delete threads/posts. Don’t lock them, don’t reply to them, just delete them.
  2.  Ban the troll right away. No warning, no questions asked, nothing. Just ban them.
  3. Collect any email address and IP they are using. Forum board usually record this information for you.
  4.  If you know of any other site they are on, what their username is, collect that info to.
  5. If they make another site, or go to another site, bashing you – so what. It’s their desperate attempt to get your attention. Don’t bother. People are smart, and when they come across this type of trash-talking, they usually know immediately the person(s) are a troll. Don’t sweat it.
  6.  Before you consider banning an actual IP – read this: http://kalsey.com/2004/02/why_ip_banning_is_useless/
  7. Beef-up registration process. Most trolls will sock-puppet (create new accounts after being banned). Set it up where you have to approve membership. This will prevent them from reregistering and posting without your approval. Usually, you can identify whether or not the new members is a legit person, or a troll just by their email address alone. You can do a little research on the email address that registered or even the username if it is unique and find them on Myspacce or elsewhere… to determine if they are a different person entirely.

Here are some things you can do to get outside help:

(from
http://www.surferbeware.com/safety/internet-safety-faqs-cyberstalking.htm)

You should report the incident to the system administrator (aka “sysadmin”) of both your Internet Service Provider (ISP) and the ISP of the stalker or harasser. Be aware that sometimes stalkers/harassers try to conceal their tracks by forging (aka “spoofing”) their e-mail headers. If you receive abusive e-mail, you might want to visit SpamCop. This free (with voluntary subscription) service will analyze your unwanted e-mail to determine its point of origin, and can generate a report that will be e-mailed to the appropriate sysadmin. You can also visit  CyberSnitch to report Internet abuse and have a report sent to the appropriate law enforcement agency.

Check with your own ISP to learn about their abuse policy; this is usually outlined in the customer service agreement. Generally complaints of abuse are sent to the postmaster or the abuse department, and the addresses will be something like “postmaster@yourisp.com” or “abuse@yourisp.com.” Many ISPs use both addresses. Go to your ISP’s web site for more detailed,  official information. Be sure to forward a complete copy of the mail, including the headers, to the sysadmin. Most sysadmins will not hesitate to cancel the account of anyone using their ISP to send abusive mail, and will cooperate with other sysadmins to prevent future occurrences. If your sysadmin does not take your complaint seriously, that may be a good reason to change ISPs.

For legal questions about cyberstalking, visit http://cyber.findlaw.com/criminal/cyberstalk.html, a collection of
articles on the subject. U.S. laws on cyberstalking vary from state to state, but if you have been threatened in e-mail, you may wish to ask an attorney about the Federal statute 18 U.S.C. 875(c). Under that statute, “transmission in interstate or foreign commerce of a communication containing any threat to kidnap any person or any threat to injure the person of another,” is a federal felony, carrying a maximum sentence of 5 years in prison and a fine of $250,000.

Updating this Site

It’s been a while since this site has had any activity. That doesn’t mean it’s being ignored — we are currently in the process of updating the blog and also adding new features. The update will include more resources as well.

We have received a lot of emails and inquiries about getting help for either dealing with a site troll or cyberstalker. That means to some degree this site has accomplished it’s goal: to help people. And, we will continue to do so.

Stay tuned, we will have an update out within the next few weeks.

Online stalking on the increase

Cyber stalking is a growing problem with typical abusers being white collar workers without criminal records, according to the 2005 Cyberstalking statistics released today by Working to Halt Online Abuse.

Jayne Hitchcock, Working to Halt Online Abuse president, said: “They [cyber stalkers] can be teachers, lawyers, businesspeople, students, doctors, the kid who bags your groceries – online harassers and stalkers are not who you may think they are.”

She added that there is no sign that the distress caused by internet harassment was declining: “On average, we can see up to 50 cases a week. We don’t see cyberstalking going away. In fact, it is increasing every day, mainly due to the fact that more people go online for the first time every day. Currently there are over one billion people online worldwide – if only one percent become victims, that’s ten million people!”

Tracking Internet stalkers and reporting them

I am quoting the following from an article I think any forum board owner should read:

Don’t underestimate the power of a board administrator. He/she has access to more then most people think, and can obtain even more information without much effort.

While the article was written in 2006, it’s tactics still work. Plus, depending on the type of forum board you are running, there are many modules that you can install to help you with the same result.

Troll Police Site News

It’s in the planning that this website will be getting the much needed attention I have been unable to give over the past year. I have some plans for expanding the Web site and its purpose.

Some of the content needs to be updated and I want to include a database full of resources, hotlines and other information.

I felt it was important to let folks know that this site isn’t dead in the water I am getting quite a few emails asking about more resources, updates and suggestions for the site. Your voice has been heard. It thrills me that at the very least, the site is helping someone.

I suspect that in April the changes I have in mind will be implemented.

Race hate message man jailed

A man who posted racist messages on a website in memory of murdered black teenager Anthony Walker was jailed for more than three years today.Neil Martin, 30, emailed at least six comments to the website - less than a week after Anthony was killed with an ice axe in a racist attack in Huyton, Merseyside, last year.

The site was set up by a school friend of the 18-year-old. Posting under the pseudonym Genuine Scouser, Martin suggested that white people should celebrate the murder, that Anthony’s family should be burned and made references to slavery and a “banana boat”.

After the verdict, Anthony’s mother, Gee Walker, said she was satisfied by the sentence and did not accept a written apology Martin had sent her. When he was arrested in September, officers also found 33 images of child pornography on his computer.

Martin, from Maghull, Merseyside, pleaded guilty at earlier hearings to publishing material likely to stir up racial hatred and to making indecent photographs of children.

He was sentenced at Liverpool crown court to two years and eight months’ in jail for the race hate crime and six months consecutively for the child pornography offences.

Judge Henry Globe QC, the recorder of Liverpool, told Martin: “The intention of the website was innocent, honourable and well motivated.

“You accessed that website and you abused its use. You posted highly abusive, insulting and racist messages on the site.”

During police interviews, Martin admitted posting the messages but insisted he was not racist. He told the officers he had intended to stir up an argument on the website but did not believe in what he had written.

Heather Lloyd, defending, said Martin had no history of racist behaviour and that he felt “deeply ashamed”.

She said: “He was isolated and living in a fantasy world, spending hours on his computer in his room where his persona could be as he made it, good or bad.”

The court heard that Martin had also created an internet profile using Anthony’s name and photograph, and that he also posed as a schoolgirl on teenage chatrooms.

Miss Lloyd said her client had written a letter of apology to both the court and the Walker family.

Speaking outside court, Mrs Walker said: “After hearing what he said in those messages, I don’t buy it. I don’t accept it. He had time to think about it and he did it six times. I don’t accept his apology.

“Hitler started with an idea, slavery started with an idea, so it is good that this was stopped in time.”
